Micah Richards to Play in UEFA Cup Tie

Manchester City center back Micah Richards had to be stretched off the pitch on Sunday after knocking heads with partner Tal Ben Haim. What looked like a painful but unremarkable clash of heads became serious when Richards fell to the field and lost consciousness within seconds of the collision. The England international spent the night in the hospital.

Thankfully, it looks like Richards will be able to play Manchester City’s UEFA Cup tie against FC Midtjylland on Thursday. Whether that is a good idea or not is beyond my expertise, though he was diagnosed with a concussion, and you would hope everybody exercises the appropriate level of restraint with any head injury. Uncertainty over his health aside, it seems almost insensitive to note that City needs all the help it can get.

The Blues lost the first leg of the tie 1-0 at City of Manchester Stadium two weeks ago. It was a surprising result when you looked at the leagues from which the clubs hailed, but City’s play and injury concerns heading into the match explained why they not only lost the match but where completely outplayed. Now leaving Manchester and having already given up a road goal, things do not look good for Mark Hughes’s crew. FC Midtjylland could bring out a bus.

The good news for City supporters is is back from the Olympics and should play. They are also coming off a 3-0 win over West Ham which, although gained playing 11-on-10, should build their confidence. If Richards can also play, that should provide a boost, if only emotional.

I keep thinking back to the collision, how it looked so innocent. Head injuries are very scary and aren’t always a result of a huge accident. Here’s hoping Richards is fully recovered.
