England: Carling Cup, Second Round Results

Published by Richard at 18:41 under Carling Cup

The second round of the Carling Cup (England’s League Cup competition) almost finished today. One match, Manchester City’s visit to Brighton & Hove Albion, was rescheduled, with City scheduled for their UEFA Cup match in Denmark tomorrow. They will face FC Mitjylland, down 1-0 after the first leg. The Carling Cup match has been rescheduled for September 22.

This second round saw twelve of the twenty Premiership clubs enter the draw. The only ones who get free passes into the third round were those who qualified for European football through something other than Fair Play. Sorry, City.

The twelve match winners will join those eight Premiership clubs in the third round, the draw for which will be held Saturday.  In this round, three Premier League sides bowed out, while the league’s lowest tier, sees Rotherham United survive while Macclesfield Town gave West Ham United a scare.

Here are the results and the level at which each team plays:

Home Score Visitor
Ipswich Town (CH) 2-1 Colchester United (L1)
Ipswich Town beats a team they shared a league with last season. Colchester United finished 24th in England’s second tier last season, leading to their relegation. Former Real Madrid midfielder Ivan Campo made his debut for Ipswich Town.
Coventry City (CH) 2-3 (et) Newcastle United (PL)
Newcastle United survived a scare with an extra time goal to advance. Michael Owen was again the hero. I’ve downloaded this match and look forward to watching it as some point between now and the weekend.
Hartlepool United (L1) 3-1 (et) West Bromwich Albion (PL)
Congratulations to Hartlepool in knocking off a Premier League side. Unlike most of the Premiership teams at this point in the competition, West Brom was said to be taking this match relatively seriously. If that’s the case, they should feel fortunate that only about 3,300 were in attendance to see them fall.
West Ham United (PL) 4-1 (et) Macclesfield Town (L2)
Yes, that scoreline is correction. West Ham scored three goals in extra time to prevent the embarrassment of losing to a team at the lowest level of league football. Macclesfield had a player send off and were playing with ten in extra time.
Huddersfield Town (L1) 1-2 Sheffield United (CH)
Darius Henderson, the multi-million dollar signing from Watford, scored the first goal and set up the second just before full-time as Sheffield United avoided a mild upset.
Cardiff City (CH) 2-1 Milton Keys Dons (L1)
Last year’s FA Cup Cinderellas made it past a game MK Dons side despite suffering three injuries during the match’s course.
Swansea City (CH) 2-1 (et) Hull City (PL)
League One’s champions scalp one of the new Premiership sides, giving Phil Brown’s Tigers their first loss of the season.
Rotherham United (L2) 0-0 (5-4) Wolverhampton Wanderers (CH)
Another two division upset with Rodderham United, one of the few League Two sides to even make it this far, bounced Wolverhampton on kicks.
Reading (CH) 5-1 Luton Town (L2)
A battle between two relegated sides was nothing of the sort, as Reading had one of the easier victories of the second round.
Blackburn Rovers (PL) 4-1 Grimsby Town (L2)
Blackburn actually fell behind in this one before easing to victory. Carlos Villanueva made his Blackburn debut.
Wigan Athletic (PL) 4-0 Notts County (L2)
Only around 4,000 showed to the JJB for this one. Wigan still rolled out a decent lineup to face the League Two side.
Leeds United (L1) 4-0 Crystal Palace (CH)
What the hell happened to Crystal Palace? It’s one thing to be off to a rough Championship start, but this result is just embarrassing. A four goal loss to a team a division down? That seems like an alternate definition for relegation.
Crewe Alexandra (L1) 2-1 Bristol City (CH)
It is because of results like these that I like these Cup competitions. You know when they saw the draw, Crewe Alexandra saw a chance to get a scalp. They probably would have preferred to get a League One or League Two team, but when you get a side one division up on your home pitch, it’s a unique opportunity to do something. They got their scalp.
Middlesbrough (PL) 5-1 Yeovil Town (L1)
Southgate made changes from the team that faced Liverpool, but the goals were still scored by names: Mido, Digard, Emnes, Alialdiere, Johnson.
Queens Park Rangers (CH) 4-0 Carlisle United (L1)
Ranger Emmanuel Ledesma scored three of QPR’s four goals
Fulham (PL) 3-2 Leicester City (L1)
I have not done formal algebra in years, but by the transitive property of game results, Leicester City is the equal of Arsenal.
Nottingham Forest (CH) 1-2 (et) Sunderland (PL)
This is the type of game in which a disciplined yet artillery-lacking side like Sunderland could get upset, and the Black Cats needed extra time to avoid one here.
Burnley (CH) 3-0 Oldham Athletic (L1)
Chris Eagles stared and Martin Paterson scored two goals as Burnley eased into Round 3.
Southhampton (CH) 2-0 Birmingham City (CH)
Birmingham made changes and may have taken Southhamption too lightly as the team that has looked so strong in the early Championship season is out of the Carling Cup.
Bolton Wanderers (PL) 1-2 Northhampton Town (L1)
Bolton undoubtedly took this too lightly, but if you have followed my comments on Bolton here and on American Soccer Reader, you know I am not too surprised by this result.
Watford (CH) 2-1 (et) Darlington (L2)
I am, however, a little surprised to see Watford have as much trouble in beating a visiting League Two team.
Preston North End (CH) 0-1 Derby County (CH)
A very good win for the Rams, and judging by the speculation surrounding their coach’s job, they needed it.
Cheltenham Town (L1) 2-3 Stoke City (PL)
That would have been an embarrassing way to follow up their first Premier League win, but Stoke City avoided being knocked off in the second round despite Cheltenham Town’s best efforts.
