PSV Eindhoven Win Dutch Super Cup
PSV Eindhoven unofficially began the defense of their four consecutive Eredivisie championships by downing Feyenoord for the Dutch Super Cup. The match-up between the winner of the regular season and the winner of the league cup was scoreless at halftime before PSV found their edge in the second half, eventually winning the match 2-0.
One of the major changes Eindhoven made this season was replacing the departed Huerelho Gomes with former Manchester City goaltender Andreas Isaksson. The Swedish international kept a clean sheet, providing a vital save towards the end of the match (after PSV already had a 2-0 lead).
Budding star midfielder Ibrahim Afellay (pictured), who barely featured for the Netherlands in Euro 2008, helped set up the first Eindhoven goal. His development will be critical if PSV is to hold off Mario van Basten’s Ajax squad.
The Eredivisie starts next weekend. I will have my predictions for the season some time in the middle of the week.
