Hamburg Happy to Sell Kompany to Man City
Hamburger SV have accepted a bid from Manchester City for 22-year-old right back Vincent Kompany. No personal terms have been agreed to yet, but a move seems likely as Hamburger wants to rid themselves of their formerly prized prospect after a rift has formed over the Olympics.
Hamburg had negotiated a deal with the Belgian football federation that would have their player return from Beijing for last Friday’s Bundesliga start at Bayern Munich. When Kompany complained about having to leave the Olympics, Hamburg became defensive, publicly noting an agreement had been in place for some time.
Kompany was on the the pitch against Bayern and was slated to get increased time this season, but now Martin Jol seems willing to let him go. With the club already saying their public goodbyes. Kompany is about to sign a four-year deal with Citeh, pending a medical.
Though Kompany could blossom, this move is unlikely to make that much of a different for either Manchester City or Hamburg. As a story, though, it has traction because of the Olympics angle. If Kompany had not made a stink about coming back to Germany, he would no have been sold to Manchester City.
