Queiroz Confirmed as New Portugal Manager
Carlos Quieroz was confirmed as new manager of Portugal today in a move that’s been expected for weeks. Manchester United and the Portuguese Federation spent this week determining what compensation the club would get for allowing Alex Ferguson’s assistant break his contract. The four year deal Queiroz signed will carry him through the next World Cup and European Championships.
Queiroz has been given a lot of credit for helping bring about tactical and roster changes at Old Trafford that led to the club’s last two league titles. The pipeline he helped open to Portugal was responsible for last season’s Superliga raid that brought Nani and Anderson to the club. As a talent evaluator, Queiroz has a number of credits on his resumé.
As a coach, Queiroz’s record can be generously described as a mixed bag. His last three managerial jobs, the last of which ended in 2004 at Real Madrid, have come to unceremonious ends. None of his six managerial positions have been undisputed successes, a various curious description to ascribe to a man who has now landed two successive elite managerial jobs.
Queiroz is obviously highly respected, and I can’t help but think he comes off very well in person. His coaching resumé, however, makes this appointment beguiling.
Quotes
“I am very proud and honoured to be able to go back and serve my country.” - Queiroz
“Carlos Queiroz is unquestionably one of the top Portuguese coaches and was my first choice to be head coach.” - Gilbert Madail, president, Portuguese Football Federation
