Fluminense Gets First Win of Brasileiro Season

Published by Richard at 9:25 under Brasileirao, Fluminense, Matches

Fluminense midfielder Darío ConcaOne of the unreported ironies of the Copa Libertadores final between Ecuador’s LDU Quito and Brazil’s Fluminense could be seen in the Brasileiro’s table.  Fluminense, finishing tied for third in the previous Brasileiro, made it to the final despite not having won in the league.

That changed on Wednesday with the Tricolor’s 3-0 win over Atletico Paranaesne.  Fluminense got a thirteenth minute goal from Dodo and added two more, including one by midfielder Darío Conca (right) in the 84th minute, after Atletico defender Nei had been red carded in the 60th minute.  Atletico had come into the contest with three wins, three draws and three losses.

Thiago Neves was kept off the scoreboard.

Despite the win, Fluminense remains at the bottom of the Brasileiro Serie A table with six points in a league where the bottom four teams get relegated.  With only seven goals in ten goals in ten matches it’s easy to see where they could stand the most improvement.  Their defense, which was so bad in their two legs against LDU, has only allowed eleven goals in ten matches.

Fluminense is five points back of sixteenth, the lower relegation-secure spot.  There are still 28 games left in the season, so it’s still early.  Tomorrow they face second place Vítoria, one of the first chances since the Libertadores final to show that their slow start was merely due to a congested early-season schedule.
