Ronaldinho to Start Comeback in Beijing

Published by Richard at 17:04 under Brazil, Olympics, Ronaldinho

Brazil attacker RonaldinhoBrazil has followed Argentina’s lead by naming a strong squad for the upcoming Olympic games.  It is not as strong as it might have been would Kaka, the AC Milan star who had lobbied to take part in the games, been healthy, but by including Ronaldinho, Robinho, and Anderson in their Olympic team, Brazil can not be accused of taking a pass on the competition.

Recent Manchester City signing as well as Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva were also selected to a team that looks at least as strong as Argentina’s.

Copa Libertadores star Thiago Neves was also selected, as was Fluminense teammate Thiago Silva who, despite a tough Copa final, has been attracting attention from Europe as a center back.

Werder Bremen’s Diego will provide depth in midfield along with Arsenal-linked Sao Paulo midfielder Hernanes.  AC Milan’s Alexandre Pato will compete for a spot amongst the starting XI with Robinho and Jô in a team that looks to be early favorites in the competition.

As always with the Brazilians, much will depend no their ability to blend their talent, but look for Ronaldinho to serve as an examplar for the team.  After a season of turmoil at Barcelona, Ronaldinho will use the Olympics as his coming out party - his first chance to reestablish his reputation as a star player.  It was for this reason that Ronaldinho lobbied hard to be included amongst Dunga’s team.  That lobbying hints that the former World Player of the Year realizes he’s at a turning point in his career.

Given a competition he could dominate if he shows up in top form, I expect Ronaldinho to be ready.
