Ronaldinho Moving Closer to Milan

Published by Richard at 14:55 under AC Milan, English Premiership, La Liga, Ronaldinho, Serie A

Barcelona attacker RonaldinhoThe only question is how much Barcelona will want for him.  I anticipate a brief attempt to extract some real money from Milan, but eventually they’ll just let Ronaldinho go.  After all, he doesn’t figure into the plans of Pep Guardiola, and getting somebody else to pay his huge salary is a plus on its own.

Milan could still start next season with Didier Drogba being supported by Kaka and Ronaldinho.  I still think that’s the best move for them  Put this Emmanuel Adebayor junk aside, go get Drogba.  He is the better player (at least for the next couple of seasons) and give his age will be a much better bargain.  Chelsea can not demand near as much for him.

If Milan sticks with what was essentially a 4-3-2-1 formation, there’s going to be a fight for time amongst the midfielders.  Andrea Pirlo is a given.  I would also think Gennaro Gattuso has to be in there.  New acquisition Mathieu Flamini would complement them well, but Massimo Ambrosini is a vice-captain there.  I don’t even know what they’ll do with Pato, Marco Borriello, Filippo Inzaghi and Clarence Seedorf, though Inzaghi and Seedorf need to give way at this point.

How did this team miss the Champions League?

The depth Milan has up front probably precludes a move for more than one attacker.  If Ronaldinho comes, they’ll probably stop their pursuits of Adebayor or Drogba even though Drogba would be an exquisite fit for them.

If Ronaldinho does go to the San Siro, the biggest loser in the deal will be Manchester City, whose whole hopes on climbing the Premiership table depend on not only acquiring Ronaldinho but also getting him in shape, hoping he regains form, and making sure he stays healthy.  He also needs to adjust to the fast pace of Premiership football and the physicality of the league.  Whether all of those things would fall into place, he was their only bet to raise the club’s profile this season.  There is no back-up plan.

If Thaksin Shinawatra really has had his funds unfrozen, he needs to make a ridiculous offer to Ronaldinho if he has any hope of fulfilling his lofty ambitions.  And even if Ronaldinho accepts, I’m not betting on those ambitions being met.
