Chelsea Lets Hernán Crespo Go
Chelsea have released Hernán Crespo after his contract expired. Though on contract to Chelsea, the 32 year old striker has been on loan in Italy for three of the last four seasons: the first at AC Milan in 2004-05; the last two at Inter Milan.
For Inter, he has 20 goals in 57 matches covering all competitions. He spent most of this season coming off the bench in a kind of super-sub role. But, with the immergence of Mario Balotelli, he is unlikely to get much time, given that Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Julio Cruz are still there. Oh, and Adriano is coming back from Brazil.
Damn Internazionale has a ton of strikers.
Crespo has little chance of breaking into this group, especially with Jose Mourinho coming on board. Mourinho is the man who sent him out on load from Chelsea, and although he recalled him for the 2005-06 season (12 goals in 35 matches and a Premiership title) it is unlikely Mourinho has softened to the aging Crespo during their time apart.
If Crespo wants to stay in Serie A, where he has spent most of his professional career, he should be able to find a job. After all, Christian Vieri just signed on with a decent club. It doesn’t look like that club will be Internazionale, though he has said he wants to. Crespo is trying to earn a spot on the Argentina’s 2010 World Cup team. Somehow, I don’t think that will happen.
